Tennessee Marketing Job Industry

Marketing careers in Tennessee benefit from an enormously productive economy.  The economic engine of Tennessee is the 18th largest in the union and is experiencing immense growth. According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, Tennessee’s gross state product grew 3.5% between 2010 and 2011, making Tennessee’s economy the 14th fastest growing economy in the country. Tennessee jumped from 41st in entrepreneurial activity in 2007to 15th in 2010.

The marketing sector in Tennessee is large and poised for rapid expansion. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Tennessee businesses employed 3,600 marketing managers in 2008, and this number is expected to grow by 5% to 3,790 by 2018. Annually, 20 new marketing manager positions will be created and another 80 will open up due to attrition.

Non-managerial positions in marketing will grow at an even faster pace. Market research analysts numbered 2,160 in 2008, and are projected to grow to 2,540 by 2018.  Forty new market research analyst positions are expected to be created annually while 60 will become available due to attrition.

Much of Tennessee’s resurgence after the recession is attributable to the presence of large corporations.  With a low tax burden and numerous business incentives Tennessee has attracted nine Fortune 500 companies: Fedex, HCA Holdings, International Paper, Dollar General, Community Health Systems, Unum Group, Autozone, Eastman Chemical, and Vanguard Health Systems. The high concentration of industry-leading companies speaks to the health of Tennessee’s economy and the potential for growth in a number of business sectors, especially marketing.

Tennessee’s manufacturing workforce and heritage has also attracted a number of important foreign investors that are heavily dependent on local marketing companies. Tennessee ranks 16th in foreign exports and has drawn $23.6 billion in foreign investment. Computer and electronic products constitute 23% of Tennessee’s exports, while 18% are transportation equipment.  Tennessee is a leader in automotive production and is the home to the North American headquarters of Nissan, the Volkswagen Chattanooga Assembly Plant and a GM re-tooling of a Saturn production plant.

Nashville is a major music industry center, with $6.4 billion in revenues derived from muscial endeavors and over 19,000 residents employed in the industry.
