Missouri Marketing Job Industry
Like many Southern states, Missouri was hard hit by the recession, but its precipitous drop in unemployment, strong recovery in manufacturing and diversified economy make Missouri an ideal destination for marketing professionals. Although there is a large marketing workforce in Missouri, this sector is expected to grow at a frantic pace in coming years.
Management positions will experience strong, steady growth through 2018. The 2,700 employed marketing managers in 2008 will add 120 new positions by 2018, a 4% expansion. Public relations managers totaled 1,320 in 2008 and will add 8% or 110 positions to 1,440 by 2018.

Non-executive positions in marketing are expected to grow at a much more rapid rate. An estimated 15% or 1,060 more positions will be added, by 2018, to the 6,800 public relations specialists in 2008. Market research analysts and marketing specialists numbered 3,770 in 2008, and this number is projected to grow to 4,430 by 2018. This constitutes a 17% increase in this occupation, far exceeding the general Missouri workforce expansion.
Missouri’s economy remains one of the most diversified in the country, providing ample marketing opportunities in a variety of business sectors. Manufacturing is the fastest growing sector and is powering the economic recovery in the state. According to the Missouri Department of Economic Development (DED), manufacturing output in 2011 was $31.9 billion or 12.8% of the total economic output of the state. Health care generated $22.5 billion in 2011 and constituted 9.0% of the Missouri economy. Finance and insurance, and retail trade were the next largest industries, each generating about 6.6% of the economic output or $16.5 billion.
Missouri’s economy will continue to gain strength in coming years. Chase Bank predicts the Missouri economy will grow by 1.4% in 2012, 2.5% in 2013, and 3.0% in 2014. Much of this growth can be attributed to a growing number of exports. According to the U.S. Census Burean, Missouri’s $14.1 billion in 2011 exports constituted a 9% increase over 2010. The strength of Missouri’s international trade, especially with Canada, Mexico and China, will afford many marketing opportunities.
Missouri’s economic good health has already attracted many of the largest companies in the country to headquarter here. Ten Fortune 500 companies make Missouri their home, including Monsanto, Reinsurance Group of America, and Charter Communications.
St. Louis has the 21st largest metropolitan economy in the U.S. with a gross metropolitan product of $133.1 billion in 2011. Nine of the ten Fortune 500 companies found in the state are located in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Manufacturing generated $11 billion in business, followed by healthcare with $3.5 billion, professional or technical services with $3.1 billion, and retail trade with $2.5 billion.
