Michigan Marketing Job Industry

Managerial positions in the marketing sector are expected to grow at a vigorous pace. Michigan businesses employed 4,170 marketing managers in 2008, and this is expected to increase by 7.7% by 2018.  Annually, 32 new marketing manager positions are projected to be created and almost 122 will be available for replacement.  Public relations managers totaled 1,380 in 2008, and this number is expected to grow by 9.3% to 1,510 by 2018.  An estimated 13 new positions in this occupation could be created annually, while 45 will be available due to workforce attrition.

Growth in non-managerial marketing positions will far outpace that of managerial positions.  Market research analysts numbered 7,020 in 2008, but this number could multiply by as much as 22% to 8,580 by 2018.  There were 8,890 public relations specialists employed in the state in 2008, and, by 2018, this number is expected to grow by 17% to 10,430.

Much of the expansion in marketing careers can be attributed to a robust and burgeoning Michigan economy.  Despite a significant economic retraction during the recession, Michigan has rebounded quickly and strongly.  According to Newsweek, Michigan is ranked number one in job growth, with a 2% drop in unemployment from 2010 to 2011.  Michigan has attracted many of the biggest names in business including 21 Fortune 500 companies.

Although a large portion of job creation is rooted in the resurgence of the auto industry, much of it is attributable to a boom in high tech businesses. Populated with acclaimed public and private universities, Michigan produces more engineers than all but two other states.  Michigan retains many of these highly skilled workers and ranks fourth in number of high tech workers, with 568,000 in 2009. Michigan ranks third or fourth in research & development expenditures, with $16.7 billion in annual industrial R & D, according to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.  The presence of flourishing high tech industry generates enormous marketing opportunities.

Detroit posted $197.8 billion in gross metropolitan product in 2010 and ranked 14th in U.S. cities.  As the center of the American automotive industry and home to the Big Three automakers, Ford, Chrysler and General Motors, Detroit has become a world center for commerce and finance.  Detroit ranks in the top five among U.S. cities in financial activity.  Quicken Loans, Ally Financial, Bank of America, PNC Financial Services, Fifth Third Bank, Ford Motor Credit Company,JP Morgan Chase, GE Capital, KPMG, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Raymond James all possess a strong presence in the city. Detroit is also a major center for high tech industry.  In 2010, Detroit was ranked first among U.S. cities in creating high tech jobs. It is home to the headquarters or major facilities for Compuware, HP Enterprise Services, IBM, Google, General Electric, Unisys, Fiserv, Covansys, and ProQuest.

Marketing Degrees in Michigan
