The Little Rock metropolitan area generated $32.88 billion in 2009, making it the 65th largest metropolitan economy in the U.S.  This was a 3.9% increase from 2008, which contrasted the national decline in metropolitan economic output of 1.6% during the same period. In April of 2011, Little Rock had an unemployment rate of only 6.5%, more than two percentage points lower than the national average of 8.7% at the time. From 2005 to 2009, the average income for Little Rock rose 4.2% while the average national income declined by 2.2% for the same time period.
