Rapid growth and systemic changes in Pennsylvania’s economy will help support swift expansion of the state’s marketing businesses. As the 6th largest state economy and the 18th largest in the world, Pennsylvania boasted a gross state product of $570 billion in 2010. The enormous economic activity generated by Pennsylvania businesses depends largely on effective marketing and PR campaigns run by the state’s many marketing firms.

According to the Center for Workplace Information & Analysis, there was a huge jump in new hires in Pennsylvania following the recession. Although Pennsylvania reported 118,700 new hires in the 2nd quarter of 2010, there were 145,500 new hires in the 2nd quarter of 2011, an increase of almost 23%. Of particular note is Pennsylvania’s aging workforce. With the 4th largest number of workers in the country on the cusp of retirement, Pennsylvania presents immense opportunities for employment and promotion.

Few states can match Pennsylvania’s business friendly environment. By fostering a high quality of life and a low tax burden, Pennsylvania has attracted some of the biggest names in business. Pennsylvania is home to 23 Fortune 500 companies including Comcast, Rite Aid, PNC Financial Services, and HJ Heinz. According to the Tax Foundation, Pennsylvania has one of the lowest tax burdens of any state economy. The presence of big business and industry in the state is a huge contributor to growth in the state’s marketing sector.

Pennsylvania boasts two of the largest and most business friendly cities in the country: Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Pittsburgh, which was showcased by Money in 2006 as one of the best cities to live in, is the 25th largest urban jobs area in the nation. Pittsburgh was rated a top ten city for business expansion by Expansion Magazine in 2008, and is home to 8 Fortune 500 companies. Pittsburgh has transitioned from its traditional heavy industry-based economy to become a major center for high tech, health care and biotech industries, all of which rely heavily on successful marketing and public relations campaigns.

Philadelphia ranks as the 7th largest metropolitan economy in the country and is home to 13 Fortune 500 companies. In 2010, Philadelphia had a gross metropolitan product of $347 billion, according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis.  Philadelphia’s prestigious place in American history also contributes to a vibrant tourism industry, with 37.5 million visitors in 2010, according to the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation. The tourism and accommodations industries create big business for the state’s marketing firms that campaign to attract the tens of millions of visitors the state hosts each year.
