Massachusetts is home to a lucrative business and retail market that is poised to lead economic growth. The state is home to residents who are considerably wealthier on average than the rest of the country.  Ranked third in per capita income, Massachusetts has ridden out the recession better than almost any other state. Unemployment was a mere 6.0% in June of 2012, considerably lower than the 8.2% national average. In addition, Massachusetts’s residents have enjoyed the 4th highest rise in per capita income in the nation in recent years. This is a key indicator of the strength of the marketing industry, as a higher per capita income is linked to more discretionary spending. Businesses and advertising firms inevitably focus more robust marketing efforts in more affluent areas of the country such as New England.

Forbes ranked the state number one in terms of quality of life, looking at education, health, crime, cost of living and poverty rates. Massachusetts is a proven economic leader with 4.5% economic growth in the first three months of 2012, far exceeding the 2.2% recorded as the nationwide average. Due to its nation leading concentration of college educated workers, Massachusetts is expected to lead the states in economic growth in the coming years.

With a gross domestic product of $363 billion in 2010, Boston is the sixth largest metropolitan economy in the United States and the 12th largest in the world. It is a major hub of finance, and home to industry leaders like Fidelity Investments, Liberty Mutual, MassMutual and State Street Corp, which rely heavily on effective marketing and public relations campaigns. This is especially true now, as the financial services industry has suffered from bad press in the wake of the Great Recession.

As a hub of technological innovation, Boston has attracted a tremendous number of venture capital firms. This has spawned the creation of many high tech start-ups eager to establish their brand through successful marketing campaigns. As one of the leaders in the New Economy, Massachusetts dominates in many industries with close ties to marketing. Because of the presence of MIT and Harvard, Boston has attracted many leading research, financial and high tech companies. Boston trails only New York City, Washington D.C. and Silicon Valley in the number of people employed in high tech positions, with roughly 191,700 such positions in the state.
